This was the perfect movie to watch on Christmas Eve with a twenty-one year old and a nineteen year old. When we weren't laughing at the movie (which was a LOT!), we were laughing at the script. The best part of the movie is a monologue by Will Ferrell, and it happens in the first fifteen minutes. The other part we loved were the out-takes. Michael Keaton does this amazing ad-lib that should not be missed. (Please get that man more work!!!)
Mark Walberg is his usual...self.
There are also a few sweet cameos, two of which are dead and gone five minutes into the movie.
Silly. Silly. Fun.

"Whip It"
I can honestly say this I never thought about Roller Derby...at all. This movie, however made me want to put on a pair of Barbie roller skates and roll over some Bitches!
The movie is "Whip It", the directorial debut of Drew Barrymore. This movie is in video stores on Tuesday, and it is a must-see for women and teen-age girls. It stars Ellen Page, Marcia Gay Harden, the delightful Alia Shawkat (playing the "best friend" again as she did in "Bart got a Room"), Juliette Lewis, Drew Barrymore and Kristen Wigg. It was the usual "girl comes into her own" story with some quirky little twists. I actually wanted to kill two of the characters at various points. I know, that sounds extreme, but it shows I got emotionally involved with the characters, and that does not always happen for me.
So- get some girlfriends together (or your husband), and have some FUN!!!

"Bart Got a Room"
You must see this film! If you were ever a teenager, are a teenager, have teenagers, or are a human being, you will be thoroughly entertained!
The entire film is about Danny's quest for a prom date while at the same time the story of how he is balancing the separate love lives of his parents, who are newly divorced.
The cast was engaging and full of sometimes unintentional humor. The stars were William H. Macy as Danny's father, Cheryl Hines as his mother, and a most wonderful Dinah Manoff as Danny's best friend's mother. Alia Stewart is Danny's best friend, Camille. She is the best part of this picture. Have fun!!!

"The Education of Charlie Banks"
This movie was directed by Limp Biskit front man, Fred Durst, so I went into this movie with low expectations, only to be pleasantly surprised. This coming-of-age film is a story that's been told before, but this time it's worth seeing again.
The film stars Jesse Eisenberg of "Adventureland" fame, but he was not the strongest actor in this ensemble piece. Jason Ritter as the hardscrabble "Mick" was engaging as young man with no hope right out of the gate. The volume of his anger at nearly everything is constantly simmering just under the surface of his cool exterior. Susan Sarandon's daughter, Eva Amurri also stars as the love interest in a rather messed-up love triangle.
Our whole family enjoyed this!

The Invention of Lying
I thought this movie was wonderful! It was written and directed by Ricky Gervais of the original "Office" fame, and stars Ricky Gervais and Jennifer Garner. Mr. Gervais also managed to rope in some amazing actors for cameo roles, including Rob Lowe, Christopher Guest, Tina Fey and Edward Norton.
The premise of the movie is that no one in the world can lie, and one day, Ricky Gervais' character just...lies. The consequences of his actions are hilarious and touching. It is a new story, told in a very witty way. I like it when movies
surprise me, and this movie filled the bill!
Also worth noting:
The cinematography reminded me of "Pleasantville" or "The Truman Show". The costumes were done by the same costumer who did "13 Going on 30".
This movie was sweet, but also managed to tackle some very real issues. I loved it!

T.V. on D.V.D.
Because we do not have cable, I have become addicted to television series' on D.V.D..Here are a few that are smart and entertaining:
"Glee": The music is wonderful, the acting is good and the writing is sharp. This series makes me want to go singing down the street in the most inappropriate way.
"How I Met Your Mother": I Loved this series so much that I bought all of the seasons that are out so far. I have the complete series of "Friends", and I enjoy this one just as much. Neil Patrick Harris and Jason Segal along with Allison Hannigan are all such strong comedic actors. The only weak link is the character of "Robin", but the rest of the ensemble are so strong, you hardly notice it.
"Dexter": I wasn't sure if I would like a show about a serial killer, but C. Michael Hall makes this work--SO WELL!! The rest of the cast is amazing as well.
"Mad Men": My 20-Year-Old son turned me on to this one. The characters are very finely drawn, and the wardrobe is FANTASTIC!

Smokin' Aces 2: Assassins' Ball
This movie comes out on Tuesday, January 19, 2010. It stars Tom Berenger as an F.B.I. agent. It turns out he has a bounty on his head, and a team of agents is assigned to protect him. You won't recognize Tom Berenger or anyone else in this film for that matter. The writing is awful, and the acting is worse. If you enjoy a lot of blood and gore, and violence fro no reason, this is the movie for you. If you MUST see it, wait until it is off the New Release list.
Also worth noting:
This movie bears absolutely no resemblance to the first "Smokin' Aces". If you liked the first one, don't expect to have the same experience.
